Printing is a process of transferring a text or image from movable type or other media to paper or other materials, by means of ink or other substances. It is the most common method of distributing information. The oldest known book to be printed using movable type was produced in China during the 14th century, but printing itself became mechanized in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Digital printing techniques are now available for many applications, including fine art printing. These techniques can be used to create unique and individualized prints that are highly detailed, with high-quality colors.
The following are some of the most common types of printing:
Lithography – A lithograph is a reproduction of an original artwork, drawn or painted on a stone or metal plate. The stone or plate is coated with a greasy ink (tusche), and then soaked in water. This causes the ink to adhere only to areas of the plate that are covered with a greasy material.
Offset lithography – Offset lithography uses a printing cylinder that runs in one direction while a sheet of paper is impressed against it. This method is ideal for colour printing and can be used for books, posters, magazines, business forms, and other items that require high-quality color images.
Laser – A laser printer is an electrically operated device that emits a concentrated beam of light onto a material, such as paper. The resulting images are high-resolution and often have a glossy finish.
Photo Printing – Making a physical copy of photos is great for scrapbooking, gift giving, and other personal memories. This can be done on your own or via a photo printing service that sends the images directly to your printer.
Library Printing – Public libraries usually offer printing services, and they’re often very affordable. They are typically limited to basic documents, but they’re a good option when you need to print a few pages quickly and affordably.
University Libraries – Some universities have campus printing services, which allow non-students to use their computers and printers for a fee. Depending on the university, these services are usually very affordable and work well for most printing needs.
Mobile Phone Printing – If you’re using a mobile phone to take photos, you can now print them from the camera without having to open your computer. Several mobile printing apps allow you to upload your photos, order them for printing, and have them delivered right to your door or in-store pickup.
Google Cloud Printing – The web browser on your computer or device will automatically detect the file you want to print and direct you to a print preview page. You can then select the file and modify your printer settings or choose to save it to Google Drive.
The print preview page will also show you options to modify your print settings, such as adjusting the paper size or orientation. You can change these settings to customize your printer’s performance.
